Here, at The OutsiderZ, we believe in freedom of expression, whether we’re talking about words, ideas, perceptions or style. We also believe in the power of makeup. I am a self confessed makeup geek, I love its transformative power, the way it allows me to switch it up and bring something creative out of me. We’re also firm believers in the fact that everyone should have the right to use makeup, be it woman, man, cat or anything and anyone else who wants to paint their faces. Other’s however, believe that makeup is intended for girly use only and that, as a man, you should stick to doing manly stuff such as drinking beer and crying/showing any kind of emotion only when you’re sure no one is around to see you. We strongly disagree, that’s why we’ve started a series of interviews with young creatives who are here to prove that makeup on men is hella gorgeous. Today we’re talking to Jacob.
My name is Jacob, I’m 19 years old, I’m from Melbourne Australia, and I’ve been a makeup artist for the past three years now, and I like pizza.
2. What’s your favourite memory from your childhood?
My favourite memory from my childhood would definitely have to be eating fish and chips while watching the Friday Night Games with my family.
3. When and how did you discover makeup? Tell us more about the very first time you tried it on.
The first time I tried makeup on I remember being in 10th grade, and I went to my local drugstore to get my first foundation with my best friend at the time. After buying it I remember being OBSESSED with putting it on and taking it off for some weird reason, and I noticed that it made me feel so excited and empowered every time I would put it on, so I decided to turn it into a career so I can empower others.
4. What is your dream career?
There is so much I want to do. I want to own my own cosmetic line and develop products, I want to still be making YouTube videos, I want to design clothing, and I love interior design. Who knows where the future will lead me.
Are you currently attending a University?
No I’m not. I started a makeup course at University just after finishing High school, and I ended up dropping out after I was offered a job at MAC full time. Now, I’m just freelancing and working my ass off on Social Media.
What’s your favourite pizza?
This question is really hard for me because all pizza is amazing, but I would have to say Prosciutto, Rocket, and Buffalo Mozzarella pizza is my favourite.
7. Do you think makeup has anything to do with someone’s sexual orientation or the gender they identify as?
Not at all. Makeup is no different from the clothes you put on your back every day. It’s just another way to express your creativity, and use a different medium to show your artistry. Rather than paint and a canvas, it’s makeup and your face.
8. What is your sexual orientation?
9. People claim wearing makeup is something shameful for a man, a sign of weakness if you will. What do you think?
I couldn’t disagree more. Makeup is nothing but empowering to people. People use it for a million different reasons. Some people have skin diseases such as Vitiligo and use it to cover that, others have acne scarring (like myself). People just want to use makeup to look like the best version of themselves.
Why do you think people are so quick to judge men who wear makeup? Are you bothered by it?
If I’m completely honest, I don’t pay any attention to people who hate on guys wearing makeup. What people say about me is none of my business. All I can say is that it’s a huge double standard.
Have you ever been bullied or harassed because of it?
Every day on social media.
12. Does being bullied every day on social media affect you?
It used to, and even to this day words still sting, but overtime you just become like a punching bag. People will just punch it, and it wont go anywhere, it will just take the punches. I can take the punches.
13. Why do you wear makeup?
I wear it because I love the confidence it gives me. It makes me feel good. However when people say that wearing makeup makes them feel amazing, others automatically think “oh they’re insecure”. Hell no, I love who I am with, and without makeup on. It’s just for fun. It comes off at the end of the day.
14. What’s your favourite makeup brand (and why)?
I honestly don’t know if I could pick one, there are so many amazing brands out there that are constantly killing it. But if I had to choose (between three) it’d be out of MAC Cosmetics, Kat Von D Beauty, and Jeffree Star Cosmetics.
What tips would you give a guy who wants to wear makeup, but doesn’t knowhow/ where to start?
I would go to a makeup counter close to you, and ask them to help you put together a natural, everyday look for you. That way you can learn about using different products and tools from someone who does this every single day. Don’t forget to blend.
What’s the greatest thing you’d like to achieve in your life?
I would like to achieve success. Success is defined by each individual person so differently, and success to me is having a career I love, and to be surrounded by people who I love and who love me.
