Here, at The OutsiderZ, we believe in freedom of expression, whether we’re talking about words, ideas, perceptions or style. We also believe in the power of makeup. I am a self confessed makeup geek, I love its transformative power, the way it allows me to switch it up and bring something creative out of me. We’re also firm believers in the fact that everyone should have the right to use makeup, be it woman, man, cat or anything and anyone else who wants to paint their faces. Other’s however, believe that makeup is intended for girly use only and that, as a man, you should stick to doing manly stuff such as drinking beer and crying/showing any kind of emotion only when you’re sure no one is around to see you. We strongly disagree, that’s why we’ve started a series of interviews with young creatives who are here to prove that makeup on men is hella gorgeous. Today we’re talking to Joshua.
Hi I’m Joshua Ben Longshaw (Joshua Benjjamin is kind of a stage name I made for myself). I am 20 years old and I live in a place called Ellesmere Port, in the UK! I am from Stoke-on-Trent originally but moved out to live with my fiancé and for University.
When and how did you discover makeup? Tell us more about the very first time you tried it on.
I can’t remember the first time I ever wore makeup because I’ve been wearing it since the age of about 13! I can although remember when I first time wore lipstick out of the house. My relationship with makeup for 6 years was to wear makeup but look like I wasn’t wearing any, but during this time for six years I did get severely bullied, and at the start of 2016 at the age of 19 I decided to wear lipstick out the house, I was anxious but I liked the way it looked so I wore it anyway. This led to the guy you see today, with a full face of makeup, lashes and all ? I decided that if I was going to get bullied for wearing a little makeup that I thought was “unclockable” then why give a f**k? If I’m going to get bullied give them something to bully me for, and since then I haven’t had one person say a word to me.
Do you see makeup as an art?
Yes 100%, you can take any part of the body and manipulate it which ever way you want using makeup it is completely an art!
Where do you find your inspiration?
I really take a LOT of inspiration from drag queens, I love how they use different styles of makeup to feminise the face and I really love to take from that and somewhat normalise it? They also have a great eye for colour and how to mix and match bizarre but incredible colour stories!
Do you think makeup has anything to do with someone’s sexual orientation or the gender they identify as?
Makeup has NOTHING at all to do with sexual orientation at all, if it is to do with sexual orientation then because straight women wear it wouldn’t straight men do it? This point made, I know MANY a straight British guy who wears makeup, even if to cover a blemish or bags under their eyes. Although only a little, they still wear makeup.
What is your sexual orientation?
I am a gay man.
What makes a person beautiful?
People claim wearing makeup is something shameful for a man, a sign of weakness if you will. What do you think?
I can just never understand why people would say that men wearing makeup is shameful, or a weakness. I think it is ridiculous! I know for 6 years of my life I got seriously bullied for wearing makeup and if I was a weak man, I would stop? Not keep on wearing it and applying more and more. For me I have no fear when walking through the street with a full face of makeup, because I am happy with the way I look and I am so proud of myself. I do not see this as weakness? And as for it being shameful, that opinion comes from very close minded people. Male celebrities they look up to all the time in magazines, movies, on the red carpet and even sports people will all wear makeup to show the “picture of health” as it shameful to look “bad” as such when within the publics eyes. I strive for perfection and I see no shame or weakness in that.
How would you define normality?
Why do you think people are so quick to judge men who wear makeup?
People are just too ignorant to try to understand something they don’t already. It doesn’t bother me whatsoever because I am happy. I could go on and on and just get annoyed but I will just leave it at that ?.
Do you have any role models?
There was a contestant on the X Factor in the UK, his name is Seann Miley Moore (Instagram- seannmileymoore) and he came out for his first audition in the highest heels, and he had a face full of makeup and he just carried himself with such confidence and it completely inspired me to give less of a fuck and do what the fuck I want!
Have you ever been bullied or harassed because of the fact that you wear makeup?
I have been bullied all my life, people will always bully. As long as there is two people in the world there will always be bullying because people, when they don’t understand, they would prefer to just believe that thing is wrong rather than trying to understand it. Bullying doesn’t bother me whatsoever, I’m glad people waste their time trying to upset me because they’re spending their time, on me.
How did you cope with all the bullying?
As I got older, I slowly just became less bothered by what other people thought as long as I felt and looked good! If I get your head turning and you choose to say things to me, you’re still giving me the attention I want.
Why do you wear makeup?
I wear makeup because I absolutely love it, and I believe I’m good at it? Haha ?
What tips would you give a guy who wants to wear makeup, but doesn’t know how / where to start?
Practice, practice and practice! As long as you are happy and you are proud of yourself then don’t give a f**k what anyone else has to say. Be happy and be yourself and if yourself is a set of lashes and enough highlight that you could see it from the moon then for goodness sake just f**king slap it on. Also, get makeup and just try it! Find your colours, styles etc and know your own limit, because you may be happier in just lipstick than you are a full face of makeup.
What would you like to be doing in 5 years?
In 5 years I will be working in makeup, and hopefully I will have started to look into starting my own makeup company! Because that is 100% my goal definitely in the next 10 years.
