“We’re our biggest enemy. Everything start from within us.”
When I was a teen, I was obsessed with Japan. And by obsessed I mean OBSESSED. I would devour anything I could find about it (and that was very little, sadly, at that time in Romania) and buy everything that was Japan related in the slightest. I (kind of) calmed down after I got to see Japan, however I still miss it and that ~ aesthetic ~ still speaks to me. Which is exactly why, when I stumbled upon Serena’s feed, it catapulted me back to those years, in which I probably would’ve cut my hand off to be able to live in a home like hers, to be able to colour my hair and to have access to clothes/decorations like those. I feel like a part of me could instantly relate, so I really, really wanted to pick her mind. Turns out, we can relate on more than one front. Here’s to not judging a book by its cover!
The basics – tell us more about you and what you do
Hello! My name is Serena and I’m a Chinese American, currently living in California. I use to be a blogger but as of right now, I’m more of a content creator on Instagram
What’s your favourite memory from your childhood?
Probably Chinese New Years, it’s not the same anymore, but I will always cherish those memories of when I beat my family in Chinese bingo! ?
3. What were you like in high school?
I was the loud Asian girl! Haha I don’t think I was very interesting in high school. I was just easy to talk to and everyone knew me, probably because I was loud…
4. What’s something you would never leave the house wearing?
I’m not too sure. Undies? I mean I always wear different things every time I leave the house!
5. What’s your favourite Studio Ghibli movie? What about your favourite anime character of all time?
Ohhhhh, it’s a close call between Howl’s moving castle and Spirited away! I also LOVE My neighbor Totoro. That’s probably everyone’s answer, tbh. I don’t really have a favorite anime character but if I had to choose, probably Mikasa from Attack on Titan.
Who are your favourite celebrities and why?
I don’t think I have any! I do think there are a lot of amazing actors and singers, but can’t say any are my favorite.
What do you think is a person’s biggest flaw?
Probably the way we think of ourselves. We’re our biggest enemy. Everything start from within us.
8. Can you cook? What’s your favourite dish?
I don’t cook, but I LOVE poke! I can eat poke every day if I could. It’s healthy, it’s delicious, and it’s easy! ??
9. What are some social issues you are involved/would like to be more involved in?
I’m a huge advocate of self love! I, myself struggle with this. I want to show people that no matter what shape, size, or color; we all deserve love. We’re all beautiful. We need to encourage each other. The world already has so much negativity. We don’t need anymore.
10. I’m pretty sure a lot of people out there think you have the perfect body. What it is that you struggle to love about yourself and what do you do in order to learn to love yourself?
Yes, I’ve had many girls/ladies tell me they wish they had my body or my body is goals. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I like this saying because it runs true to how others think of us and how we think of ourselves. Of course I don’t think I’m ‘big’, but I do think my body can do better. Everyone has adipose tissues. It’s natural. We need it. To be honest, we all just want to be the best version of ourselves, don’t matter what shape and size. The first step in loving yourself is truly accepting who you are. Accept your flaws. Accept what you think is imperfect.
What would you like to change about today’s society?
I honestly just wish everyone would open their hearts to change. To be less judgmental. To be more accepting of one another. To just love.
What’s one surprising thing about you that not many people know?
Haha probably the fact that my life isn’t as glamorous as it looks on my Instagram.
13. What’s the best gift you ever received?
The gift of life. I’m just grateful to be alive.
14. If you had the chance to go back in the past, would you change anything?
To be honest, I want to say yes but I’m going to say no. I feel like things happen for a reason and I am where I am now because of what has happened.
15. Give us a piece of advice.
Please love yourself, life already does so much to drag us down. We don’t need to do it ourselves.
16. What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream is to truly find happiness in all aspect of life. Whether it’s in career, family, myself, or health. I just want to be happy.
